DanMartin

“This book was an absolute joy to read.”

So says BookTuber Dan Martin in his Goodreads review of Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s. But Dan doesn’t stop there, he reciprocates, bringing joy into my world with this amazing review on YouTube, in which he calls the book “Hilarious” and “Maddeningly good,” among other things. This is the first time Dan has reviewed an indie book, so I’m hugely flattered, especially since it’s my debut book. Dan himself has a book due out in October, Operation Cure Boredom, which sounds like a hoot. It’s on my wishlist already.

Daringly off-road

A number of readers have asked me for links to Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s other than those provided by Amazon. The eBook is available for the Nook, Kobo, and Android (ePUB) platforms, as indeed Ivy Feckett is Looking for Love will be, albeit shortly after being made available on the Kindle and in paperback. The paperback version of Cannibal Joe’s is distributed by Ingram, which unfortunately does not have a central distribution site, but I know for sure that you can purchase it locally in Sweden, India, Poland, Croatia, Australia and even on fecking eBay.

If you know of any more, feel free to let me know!

*UPDATE* Here are further links for IndieBound, Alibris, The Book Depository, and AbeBooks.

Breakfast at Cannibal Joe's, Neoliberalism

Anyone who’s read Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s will recognize a reference in this news item on the indignities suffered by workers in poultry processing plants in the USA.

A report from Oxfam America recently released reveals that in many factory farms, workers are denied bathroom breaks. The report cited several major producers of poultry including Tyson Foods Inc., Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., Perdue Farms Inc. and Sanderson Farms Inc.. Workers in these factories report inhumane conditions and a lack of fair treatment by managers and supervisors.

Workers’ needs are regularly mocked, laughed at, ignored, and sometimes even used as a means for firing. As a result, many workers dangerously restrict their intake of foods and fluids to make their shifts more bearable while others have been forced to urinate and defecate on themselves. Many, in order to bypass the need to use a restroom wear adult diapers to work regularly.

For those of you who haven’t read it, here’s the relevant passage:

diapers

It’s tempting to regard Cannibal Joe’s as just a surreal absurdist dystopia that “could never happen here,” but that was never my intention. The world of Cannibal Joe’s is neoliberalism taken to its logical conclusions. The longer neoliberalism lasts, the more it will resemble the book. You have been warned.

Incidentally, and not entirely uncoincidentally, Novel No. 3, Fowl Play, is itself set in a poultry processing plant. You have been warned again!

Breakfast at Cannibal Joe's, Grünter Gross, Pigs

Grunterlives!

A lovely gift from my ever-thoughtful darling wife: A china version of the three-legged pig that graces the cover of Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s. And yes, that is a stump you can see between his legs. I checked.

Grünter is keeping some illustrious company, as you can see. Besides the menu filched from the Cafe de Flore, there’s Henning Mankell, Franz Kafka, Maurice Brinton, Sylvia Federici,Martin Heidegger and my ridiculously talented nephew Ollie, holding the children’s BAFTA for Coraline, on which he worked as an animator. Ollie’s portfolio includes Fantastic Mr. Fox, Corpse Bride, Paranorman, and The Boxtrolls. He’s currently working on Kubo and the Two Strings, due out next September.

Comedy

Readfree.ly has placed Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s on the shortlist for the 50 Best Indie Books, under the Comedy Genre. It is now asking folk to vote for the one comedy book that really must be included on the list. You wouldn’t do me a favor and go vote, would you? I didn’t realize there’d be a second round of voting, but it would be really very much greatly highly appreciated.

Breakfast at Cannibal Joe's, Jon Langford, Lord of the Book Covers

Native Cover_5131623_Kindle Front Cover

The good folk over at CompletelyNovel have officially announced the winner of the Lord of the Book Covers award for 2015. The announcement is accompanied by short statements from Jon and me explaining the rationale behind the design of the cover of Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s. You can see, too, from the announcement that the competition was really tight and that there were some knockout covers in the shortlist, including The Brighton Maverick: The complete series of love, life and liaisons in Brighton’s Lanes, by Scott Chadwick; The Alchemist’s Kiss, by AR DeClerck; Stan and the Enchantress, by Sarah Hitchcock; and The Inheritance Powder, by Hilary Standing.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to vote for me, and thank you to CompletelyNovel for organising a contest that gives indie authors and artists a chance to shine. A particular thank you, too, to my friend Caitriona Lally, who drew my attention to the contest in the first place and encouraged me to enter. If you haven’t yet checked out Caitriona’s debut novel, Eggshells, I urge you to seek it out. It’s fab.
